Game Design Documents

Different game design documents of varying sorts. Most are outlines and descriptions of characters or locations.

RPG Encounter Based on LOTR Balin's Tomb Scene

Written for an assignment given in the course RPG Writing Workshop at Carnegie Mellon University.  The objective of this assignment was to practice writing details for maps and encounters to prepare us to write our own campaign encounters as I did for The Fall of Moria. This document included a map and details what was in the room and how a GM should interact with players to try to trigger a scene similar to the Balin's Tomb scene in the first LOTR movie.

Overview:

The scene takes place in Act 4, right after Thrain I asks them to help delay the Balrog so the citizens could escape. Each member of the team knows that this time there is no way out, so after agreeing to stay behind, they each leave to quickly finish up their business.

The scene focuses on Thiddumir saying his farewells to his wife and kids.

Environmental Design
Chpt 0:
Location 1: Ruins in the center of the woods. The ruins are a circular area of light-ish grey to cream stone filled with cracks and rubble. Very flat, but the edges have larger rubble like low walls may have fallen many years ago. Mostly, the remains are pillars both broken and still standing. It is about the width of a large stage. The entire area of these woods is enclosed by a river on all sides, and directly to the North, South, East, and West from the circular ruins in the center, there are temples. Each one looks almost alike but the symbols above the entrance are different. (One has a symbol for each of the 4 elements). Like the image on the right in shape, but the two center columns are not there, and the stairs descend into the ground, rather than going upwards, so the entire facade is kind of below ground level, and there is a fancy door currently locked shut.
